Girls More Likely to Drink Because of Peer Pressure

Isn’t this the whole idea behind ‘Pub culture’?

“Peer pressure was positively associated with drinking for girls and not boys,” said Bruce Simons-Morton, who led the study conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

A number of experts said it’s not surprising that girls are swayed by their friends more easily than boys. “I’m not surprised at all. Girls go through this tremendous emotional and hormonal change as they go to seventh grade,” said Shannon McLinden, an author on the subject and a speaker on teenage confidence. “The change comes at a time when being your own person and trying to stand on your own feet is really important.”

The study also found that the main indicator of whether teens began drinking or smoking is whether they have friends who do. Simons-Morton said this held true for boys and girls.

  1. Frankly.. I believe its matter of choice.. everyone has a choice to do what they like.. And teenage kids are not allowed in the pub.

  2. Attacks on women by the right wing is on the rise in Karnataka. There is a total lack of security for women, specifically teenage girls. Any one can follow girls and beat them up and escape. Many such complaints are not registered and police is not taking any action against the attackers. This is high time each and every citizen of Karnataka strongly react, and force the govt to take steps to control the vandals.

Attacks on muslims are also on the rise. The latest such attack occurred few days back:

Detailed account of the attacks can be found in the following website(a congregation of women against these goonda attacks).

Those who still have a bit of self respect and a sense of responsibility should come forward to oppose the right wing goondas, to save the dignity of women in this country.

  3. The west happens to have a more orderly society because of scientific and economic development. They also happened to develop a society with certain notions of freedom.

Whether there is a causal relationship between certain kinds of social freedom and economic development, is a non-trivial issue that our loose “freedom brigade” is incapable of assessing scientifically. They take the correlation to automatically imply causation purely because they like to be “loose”. And because they dogmatically believe in free will, like the Mr./Ms. Winnie the poohi above seems to.

Hinduism never believed in unrestricted free will because Hindus have traditionally known that people are ( at least to a large extent ) under the control of vAsanas that cannot be overcome just like that. All this business of “freedom to choose” is a hopelessly oversimplified model.

Thank you for this blog. I had almost given up on female bloggers…
